A 3-Day Devotional Based on Pastor Bill's message, April 26, 2026
Day 1 - The Pressure and the Power
Read: 1 Thessalonians 1:2-6
Devotional:
We often pray for the removal of pressure, yet the history of the early church suggests that the most powerful movements of God happen right in the middle of "much affliction." The word used for affliction in the original text refers to a literal, severe pressure—the kind used to crush grapes until they burst into wine. It is easy to have a form of faith when life is smooth, but a faith that carries "full conviction" is often forged when we are swimming against the current of our culture, our old habits, or even the disapproval of those closest to us.
This is the power of the gospel: it does not wait for your circumstances to improve before it grants you joy. It is "dunamis"—spiritual dynamite—that enters your life and provides an internal strength that the world cannot manufacture. When you feel the weight of life pressing in on you today, remember that the Holy Spirit uses that very pressure to expand your heart. Like a new wineskin, you are being made capable of holding more of God's presence and more of His joy than you ever could in a season of ease.
Application:
In what area of your life are you currently feeling the most "pressure," and how might God be using that specific situation to expand your capacity for His joy?
Day 2 - The Divine Partnership
Read: Luke 5:37-38; Ephesians 2:8-10
Devotional:
One of the greatest mysteries of the Christian life is the tension between God’s sovereignty and our responsibility. We are clearly told that God has chosen us and that salvation is a gift of pure grace—not something we could ever earn by our own effort. Yet, the moment we receive that gift, we are invited into a partnership. We are called to a "work of faith" and a "labor of love". Faith is not sitting on our laurels waiting for God to do everything; it is the active obedience of walking in the "good works" He has already prepared for us.
Think of your heart as that wineskin. God provides the "new wine"—the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit—but we are responsible for maintaining a "fresh" and teachable heart. If we become rigid or stuck in our old ways, we cannot handle the pressure of what God wants to do through us. But when we offer our lives as a "right sacrifice" and put our trust in Him, we find a path to peace even in the middle of distress. It is a partnership where we do what we can, and we trust Him to do what only He can.
Application:
Are you leaning too far toward "doing it all yourself" (legalism) or "doing nothing at all" (liberalism)? What is one practical step of "work of faith" you can take today while trusting in God’s sovereignty?
Day 3 - The Reverberating Life
Read: 1 Thessalonians 1:7-10
Devotional:
When the gospel truly takes hold of a person, they don't have to try to be an "influencer"—their life naturally begins to "sound forth". The word used here implies a reverberation, like a trumpet call or a relay station that receives a signal and sends it out with even more power. The people in Thessalonica didn't have the internet or radio, yet in just a few months, the story of their transformed lives had spread hundreds of miles.
What was it that people were talking about? They noticed three things: what these believers turned from, what they turned to, and what they were waiting for. They turned from the idols that previously held them captive; they began serving the living God with active love; and they lived with a daily expectation that Jesus was coming back. Your life "sounds forth" most clearly when your neighbors, coworkers, and family see you letting go of old "idols"—whether that’s a habit, a grudge, or a search for approval—and replacing them with a quiet, joyful service to God.
Application:
What "idol" or old habit have you recently turned away from, and how can you intentionally "sound forth" God's goodness to someone in your circle today?
